Our partner, the International Centre for Arts & Music in Ouidah (CIAMO) is a vibrant center devoted to promoting arts education as a dynamic tool for growth in the developing world. Every week over 300 students pass through the doors, taking advantage of opportunities to thrive and grow in the arts. CIAMO also works with local area artists, helping them to gain expertise that permits them to become better artists and better teachers. CIAMO relies on a team of international and local artists to teach its students. We need your help!
Your Role
CIAMO has a vibrant dance program and offers a Dance Teacher volunteer the exciting opportunity to both teach modern dance as well as learn a wide variety of west-African dancing traditions. You will be expected to teach dance classes to primary school and secondary school students. Depending on the teacher’s specialty, s/he will teach hip-hop, improvisation, jazz, and/or ballet.
Examples of Activities
Teach modern dance, interpretative dance, jazz, an/or ballet to small classes at primary and secondary schools
Assist local dance instructors in forming children in traditional and modern dance
Shadow and collaborate with the center’s newly establish dance troupe, the Super Stars of Ouidah
Collaborate with local dance teachers to promote good technique and pedagogy in the classroom
Language Requirement
Intermediate French (Note: if you do not have the required level of French, contact us to learn about options for language learning before your placement or other opportunities which may be suited to your goals and skills).
Typical Volunteer Hours
Volunteers should consider teaching at CIAMO as a full-time activity. S/he will teach between 5-10 hours a week, and spend about 10-20 hours a week working with dance teachers, collaborating with dance troupes, and spending time one-on-one with excelling students.
Duration: 2 months +
When: Based on class schedules, it is preferable for the volunteer to start in January, April, July or October. However, this is flexible.
Asset Skills:
Experience as a dance teacher or choreographer
Understanding of dance technique and pedagogy
Skilled in at least 2 genre (ex. hip-hop, jazz, ballet)
At least 1 year of dance study at a conservatory or university
