Becoming a TEFL teacher is open to native speakers and non-native English speakers.
Before teaching English abroad some people choose to take a TEFL course (also known as TESOL course). This course helps prepare you for a career teaching English abroad and can give you an insight into what to expect from a teaching placement.

There are a diverse range of TEFL courses available across the world. The TEFL certification is usually taken in the persons home country with some courses like the intensive certificate usually last four weeks whilst other courses can include over 100 hours of training and can be completed online.
A lot of TEFL course providers have excellent links with schools, language houses and can be a great assistance to finding a job afterwards.
Teaching English is a popular option for people seeking to intergrate into a new culture and live in a different country. Some placements are voluntary, for example you can live in the developing world whilst teaching to a local community.
There is a large demand for paid English teachers in Asia, popular destinations include Thailand, China, Japan and Korea. Wages can vary depending on experience and the teaching placement you are doing, for example there is a big different between teaching at a preschool, college, university, private school to teaching to institutes and private tutoring.

There are many responsibilities of a TEFL teacher. When teaching English abroad, you will need to be proficient in speaking and delivering English interactive content and comprehensive classroom.
The use visual aides such as printed materials, multimedia and a variety of audio-visual aids are really useful in classes. You will need to be prepared for lessons prior to the start of each class. Language games with emphasis on dialogue, singing and role-playing getting the pupils involved is highly recommended.
Try to get assistance from local teachers / trainers to ensure your classes are run efficiently, don't be afraid to ask for help. Teaching English can be a really fun job and a great way to live in a foreign country for a prolonged period of time.
Try to get involved with outside of classroom activities, this is a good way to make friends, improve your language skills and make your experience more enjoyable.
